Are you suffering from persistent headaches?

Cervicogenic (tension) headaches

Cervicogenic headaches describes the type of headache whose origin is from the cervical (neck) region of the spine.

These typically present as discomfort around the base of the skull or into the forehead, as well as pressure behind the eyes.

This type of headaches commonly affect people in their 30’s and can affect around 40% of people at some point in their lifetime. Just under 5% of people go on to have long-term problems.

Individuals with tension headaches typically have ‘trigger points’ (tender points) in the muscles of their neck that can lead to pain being referred up onto regions of the skull (such as the temples of behind the eyes).

It is thought that environmental factors, such as stress and sleep disturbances play a role in the generation of the headaches.

What we do to treat tension headaches

It’s important to fully understand the origin of the headaches. This means that we will need to conduct a thorough physical examination, so that we can assess the cervical spine and it’s surrounding musculature.

We also need to take a look at your lifestyle to see if there are any environmental of lifestyle factors that could be playing a role in the generation of your symptoms.

If we are happy to treat your headaches, then we will explain the plan of management and why we believe this is best for yourself. This will likely involve some hands-on treatment to help relieve tension in the neck. Your chiropractor will prescribe physical rehabilitation where they feel it is necessary to help enhance the effect of the treatment and build resilience in the neck.

If we feel that there are some lifestyle or environmental factors that are contributing to your symptoms, it is also possible that we may make a recommendation for addressing these areas as well (such as stress management techniques or Sleep Hygiene).

If at any point your chiropractor feels that your headaches are not cervicogenic in their origin and that treatment with ourselves is not appropriate, then they will advise you on the best next steps you should take.
