Sciatica

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve (or the root of) is irritated or compressed. There are a variety of causes of sciatica, ranging from inflammation to nerve root compression. Symptoms can vary from mild to very severe. Find relief for sciatica here.

The pain is typically accompanied by neurological symptoms, such as pins and needles, numbness or weakness in associated muscles.

Disc injuries are common causes of sciatica. These injuries are largely genetically driven and will likely fully resolve within a year . However, early identification of the problem and an accurate management strategy are key to reducing symptom levels as quickly as possible.

What we do to treat sciatica

Our goal for treatment of sciatica would be to get the pain under control as quickly as possible and then manage this whilst your body heals.

Sometimes problems like sciatica involve a need for further imaging (such as X-ray or MRI). If this is necessary, your chiropractor will be able to assist you in this process.

A thorough physical assessment is key to identify the level of sciatic nerve irritation. This helps to shape your physical rehabilitation and the style of hands-on treatment that we select for yourself.

We also need to take a deep dive into your lifestyle so that we can offer management advice for areas that we need to address.

This could simply be ergonomic advice to reduce how much the nerve is being aggravated day to day, or perhaps prescribing Sleep Hygiene as a way to improve your quality and quantity of sleep.
